How to Prepare to Sell Your Home

Are you getting ready to sell your home this year? There’s more to selling your home than just hiring a real estate agent and sticking a ‘For Sale’ sign in your front yard. Be prepare to roll up your sleeves and put in some work to get your home in top selling condition. Here are a few tips to help make your home stand out and woo prospective buyers.

Improve your curb appeal

First impressions matter, especially in real estate. Buyers begin to form opinions on your home the moment they pull up to the house so make sure it’s a good one! Stand outside your home and take note of any work that should be done: improve your landscaping (i.e. mow the lawn, weed the garden, plant flowers, etc.), pressure wash your home (especially if you have vinyl siding), clean the gutters, and make any necessary repairs (this applies inside and out!).

De-clutter and de-personalize the living areas

You’re showcasing your home; not your belongings. The goal is to allow buyers see themselves and their families in your home. Make this easier by clearing your rooms of personal items and photos, knickknacks, and extra furniture. If your rooms are filled with your furniture and stuff, buyers may wonder if there’s enough space for their things. Either donate extra items or rent a storage space.

Organize closets and drawers

Few things are off-limits for buyers as they tour your home. Expect people to open cabinets, closets, and drawers to see if there’s enough space for their stuff. Messy closet and drawers gives buyers the impression that there isn’t enough storage space.

Repaint with neutrals

That deep red color in your bedroom may make your heart skip a beat, but it could completely make a potential buyer run cold. Paint your walls a neutral color to appeal to the widest base of buyers. Using neutral colors also make it easier for buyers to picture their desired color as well.

Neutralize odors

This is especially important if you have pets. While you may not notice anything, visitors to your home will immediately pick up on any odors. Sometime you’ll need to conduct a deep clean to address any odors and be sure to refrain from cooking extremely fragrant foods while your home is on the market.

These simple tips will help you get your home in prime showing condition.
