This season marks the beginning of the holiday whirlwind and it’s a great opportunity to take a moment and organize your home to make sure you’re ready for all the fun this season offers.

Reset your home for fall; store the spring and summer clothes, sports gear, and toys, and pull out the season’s items. Get your home ready and organized this season by following these tips.

1. Sort Clothing

Fall and Winter are the months for cozy sweaters and heavy coats, so it’s time to pack up the shorts and t-shirts. Clean your seasonal clothes and then sort through and decide whether to keep, donate, or toss them. Store the items you’ll keep. Now that you have a bit of room in your closets, take out your fall/winter items and repeat process.

2. Organize the Garage

You’ll most likely will want to start in the garage (and you’re most likely to put it off). After doing a preliminary scan of the state of your garage, start by clearing away anything you haven’t used in a couple of years, that is broken, or is simply junk (raise your hand if you have at least one pair of old crutches living somewhere in your garage). The next step is to donate or toss those items and then grouping the remaining things in groups (tools, holiday decorations, other equipment, etc.) and then plan to put everything in their proper place.

3. Pack up the Backyard

Your backyard furniture did its job this season so make sure you take care of it so you don’t have to replace everything next summer. Clean any pieces you will be storing: grills, seat cushions, umbrellas, etc. and store what you can in your garage or closed storage unit. If you can’t fit your furniture, cover the frames with a heavy-duty waterproof cover to keep them in shape for the next season.

4. Decorate for the Season

A new season means a new opportunity to refresh your home’s décor! You don’t need to redo your entire house but adding a few fall-inspired touches – think golds, warm colors, nature-inspired textures like twisty branches or leaves, or even pumpkin and gourds – will get your home ready to celebrate the season.

Saying goodbye to summer can be bittersweet but taking these few tips will get you ready to embrace fall and all upcoming holidays.
